Kids stories

Alek the shy but brave dinosaur loses his shiny pebble in the cool cave. With a friendly Prehistoric Man and a warm torch, he searches tunnels, meets a tiny beetle, and finds his pebble again—plus a new string to keep it safe.
Alek and the Shiny Pebble in the Cave

Alek the dinosaur lived in a cave. The cave was cool and safe. Drip, drip, went the water. Tap, tap, went Alek’s feet.

Alek was a small dinosaur with big kind eyes. He was brave, but also a little shy. He liked quiet sounds. He liked soft stones.

One morning, Alek blinked. “My shiny pebble!” he said.

His shiny pebble was gone.

Alek looked left. He looked right. He sniffed. Sniff, sniff.

From the cave mouth, a Prehistoric Man walked in. He had messy hair and a friendly smile. He carried a torch that crackled.

“Hello, Alek,” said the Prehistoric Man.

“Hello,” said Alek, very softly. “I lost my shiny pebble.”

The Prehistoric Man nodded. “We can look together. Teamwork!”

Alek’s tail swished. “Together,” he said.

They started deep in the cave. The walls were dark. But the torch made warm light. Shadows danced like silly feet.

“Boo!” said the Prehistoric Man, making a funny shadow face.

Alek let out a tiny giggle. “Not scary,” he said. “Just funny.”

They searched near the sleeping spot. They searched by the drip pool. Plip-plop, the water sang.

“Shiny pebble,” Alek called. “Where are you?”

No answer.

They found little things instead. A smooth shell. A feather. A round nut.

“Treasure?” asked Alek.

“Little treasure,” said the Prehistoric Man. “But we keep looking.”

They went into a narrow tunnel. Alek took a deep breath.

“It’s tight,” Alek whispered.

“I’m here,” said the Prehistoric Man. “Slow steps.”

Alek took slow steps. Tap… tap… tap.

Then they heard a sound. Scritch-scratch. Scritch-scratch.

Alek froze.

The Prehistoric Man lifted the torch. “Let’s be curious,” he said. “Not scared.”

Behind a rock, a tiny cave beetle pushed something bright. It was trying very hard.

Alek leaned in. “My pebble!” he said.

The pebble was stuck in a crack. The beetle wanted it, but it could not lift it.

Alek felt gentle inside. “Hello, little beetle,” he said.

The beetle wiggled its legs.

The Prehistoric Man whispered, “It’s not being mean. It just likes shiny things.”

Alek nodded. “I like shiny things too.”

Alek tried to pull the pebble out with his small claws. It would not move.

“Hmm,” said Alek. “Need a tool.”

The Prehistoric Man smiled. “Good idea.” He found a flat stick and a thin stone. “We can pry.”

Alek watched closely. The Prehistoric Man slid the stick under the pebble. He pressed with the stone.

Pop!

The pebble jumped free.

Alek gasped. “Yes!”

The beetle bumped the pebble once, like a kiss, then scurried away.

Alek held the pebble in his paws. It glittered in the torchlight, like a tiny star.

“I’m happy,” Alek said.

The Prehistoric Man said, “You were brave in the tunnel. And you were kind to the beetle.”

Alek stood taller. “I can be brave and kind,” he said.

They walked back to the big cave room. Drip, drip. Warm light. Safe shadows.

The Prehistoric Man reached into his pouch. “A bonus,” he said.

He gave Alek a small leather string.

Alek blinked. “For me?”

“For your shiny pebble,” said the Prehistoric Man. “So it won’t get lost again.”

Alek put the string through a hole in the pebble. He wore it like a necklace.

“Now it stays with me,” Alek said.

He smiled wide. The Prehistoric Man laughed.

In the cozy cave, Alek’s pebble shined, and Alek felt big inside—brave, gentle, and proud.
