Luka the Wanderer was an Explorer. He walked slow. He looked close. He liked to find new places.
One evening, Luka saw a big Haunted Mansion on a hill. The door was tall. The windows were dark.
“Hello, house,” said Luka.
A soft creak answered. Crrreee.
Luka felt a tiny shiver. “I can be brave,” he whispered.
A small friend flew down from the roof. It was Griffin. Griffin was fluffy and quick. Griffin liked jokes. Griffin also watched out for Luka.
“Boo!” Griffin said.
Luka blinked. Then he giggled. “Nice try.”
They stepped inside. The hall was long. The floor went tap-tap. A candle on the wall went flicker-flicker.
“Where is the light?” Luka asked.
A cold whisper slid by. “Mine…”
A shadow swirled. Fantom.
Fantom was not a monster with teeth. Fantom was a sneaky shadow who liked to hide things.
Griffin puffed up. “Give it back!”
Fantom went whoooosh into the ceiling.
The mansion got darker. Luka held Griffin’s paw. “We will solve the mansion mystery,” Luka said. “We will find the lost light.”
They walked to a red door. It had a moon on it.
Knock knock.
The door opened by itself. Eeeek.
Inside was a play room. Old toys sat still. A tiny drum. A wooden horse. A soft bear.
Luka waved. “Hi, toys.”
The bear’s button eyes seemed sad.
Griffin pointed. “Look! Footprints. Dusty ones.”
Little dusty marks went to a cabinet.
Luka took a deep breath. “Open, please.”
The cabinet did not open.
Griffin hopped. “Maybe a magic word!”
Luka tried. “Please.”
Click.
The cabinet opened. Inside was a small silver key and a shiny coin.
“Treasure!” Griffin said.
Luka smiled. “We keep it safe.” He put the coin in his pocket.
They followed the dusty marks to a green door. It had a star on it.
Behind it was a hallway with many mirrors. The mirrors looked wiggly.
Griffin whispered, “I don’t like mirrors.”
Luka held Griffin close. “We go together.”
In one mirror, Luka saw Fantom, hiding a bright lantern.
“There!” Luka said.
Fantom hissed, “No light for you.”
Luka did not yell. He spoke soft. “Fantom, are you scared of light?”
Fantom paused.
Griffin blinked. “Are you?”
Fantom’s voice got small. “Light makes me feel seen.”
Luka nodded. “Seen is okay. We can be kind.”
He held up the shiny coin. It glowed a little in the mirror.
“See? Gentle light,” Luka said.
Fantom drifted down, slow as dust. “Gentle?”
“Gentle,” said Luka.
Fantom gave the lantern. “If it is gentle.”
Luka took the lantern and turned it on. Warm light filled the hall. The mansion sighed, like a sleepy cat.
The toys in the play room moved again. Tap-tap. Roll-roll.
Griffin cheered. “We did it!”
Fantom did not run away. Fantom stayed near the wall, calm.
Luka put the silver key in his bag. “A key for more exploring,” he said.
Then the floor made a happy clunk. A small box popped up by the door.
Inside were two soft gold stickers shaped like stars.
“For brave Explorers,” whispered the mansion.
Luka put one star sticker on Griffin’s fluffy chest. Griffin laughed.
Luka put the other on his own coat. “Now we shine,” he said.
They walked out of the Haunted Mansion. The hill was quiet. The lantern glowed warm.
Griffin yawned. “Next adventure?”
Luka nodded. “Yes. Together.”
